Framed or frameless? The single biggest decision.
The first question to answer is not which brand, it is which box type. Framed vs frameless dictates drawer capacity, interior access, and how your doors sit on the cabinet.
Framed cabinets
A 1.5-inch face frame is attached to the front of the box. Doors and drawers mount onto that frame. This is the traditional American construction you grew up with.
Interior access is slightly tighter — the frame narrows the opening by about 1 to 1.5 inches per side. What you gain is rock-solid door alignment over time and a broader range of traditional door styles, including inset, where the door sits flush inside the frame.
In the catalog: Fabuwood, Mantra, 1951, Showplace, Legacy Crafted, Bertch, and most UltraCraft lines.
Frameless cabinets
Sometimes called European or full-access. The face frame is skipped. The door mounts directly to the box side.
You get about 10 to 15 percent more usable drawer width at the same cabinet width. Interior sightlines are cleaner. The reveal between doors is tighter. The trade-off: door alignment depends on a perfectly square box and precise hinges — manufacturing tolerance matters more.
In the catalog: Showplace EVO, Bauformat, and UltraCraft’s full-access line.
Rule of thumb
Which price tier is realistic for your kitchen?
In the DMV, most kitchen remodels fall between $15,000 and $75,000 depending on size, scope, and brand tier. Northern Virginia averages sit around $75,000 — roughly 40% above the national average. Cabinetry is 35 to 45% of that total.
| Tier | Brands | What You Get | Typical DMV Kitchen Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| $ value / stock | RTA Cabinets, Fabuwood, Mantra, 1951 | Fastest lead time, plywood box, dovetail drawers standard on RTA and 1951, strong painted Shaker menu | $15K–$27K minor updates / small kitchens |
| $$ semi-custom | Showplace, Showplace EVO, Legacy Crafted | Modified widths and heights in 1/4" or 3" increments, broader catalog, inset available on select lines | $40K–$78K medium kitchens, midrange |
| $$$ semi-custom to custom | Bertch, Ultracraft | Near-custom sizing, full finish palette, inset and beaded frames, upgraded drawer box | $78K–$155K large / upscale |
| $$$$ engineered / European | Bauformat | German tolerances, integrated appliance panels, handleless channels, motion-actuated openings | $120K+ luxury / architectural |
Ranges reflect kitchen remodel totals in Northern Virginia and the wider DMV — cabinets and install combined. Sources: 2026 Remodeling Cost Report and 45 Kitchen Remodeling Ideas for 2026.

Q1 2026 audit — three non-obvious findings
1. Modification surcharges hit the $ tier hardest.
On stock lines — Fabuwood, Mantra, 1951 — modifications like reduced-depth wall cabinets, taller bases, or custom fillers added 12 to 18% to line-item price. Lead time slid from ~2 weeks into ~4 weeks. For an irregular galley or a radiator in the way, the stock savings often vanished by the time the mods were priced in.
2. Bauformat surprised on delivery consistency.
Despite the longest nominal lead time, Bauformat landed inside the quoted window on a higher percentage of tracked jobs than two mid-tier domestic brands. German scheduling and pre-consolidated ocean freight beat domestic trucking, which swings with carrier capacity across our multi-state network.
3. RTA beat stock brands on total time-to-install.
On standard 10×10 Shaker kitchens with no modifications, RTA averaged days-to-install from order to on-wall. Fabuwood ran 2 to 3 weeks. Mantra ran 3 to 5 weeks. The plywood-box and dovetail-drawer spec held up in post-install inspections at the same rate as the semi-custom lines.
Methodology. We tracked 100+ kitchen orders across our showroom network in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, Texas, New Jersey, Florida, and Tennessee between January and March 2026. Lead time was measured from cabinet order placement to confirmed on-site delivery. Modifications were flagged when the final quoted line item diverged from the manufacturer’s standard spec catalog.
Buying cabinetry is not the same as buying cabinets with install.
- In-house design. A designer builds the plan with you in the showroom — using working displays of the brands you are shortlisting, not stock renderings.
- Measure. A measure tech verifies every wall, outlet, window rough opening, and existing soffit before the order is submitted.
- Install. Our own crews handle the install — not subcontracted out per job.
- Warranty ownership. Warranty claims run through USA Cabinet Store, not the manufacturer. Matters most on European brands and inset or full-custom orders.
- 14+ showrooms across 7 states. VA, MD, NC, TX, NJ, FL, and TN — with samples and working displays on the floor.
- Contractor trade program. Volume pricing on RTA and branded lines, dedicated project managers, priority scheduling for professional accounts.
After 15+ years and thousands of kitchens, we know the projects we serve best.
- You need a custom finish outside any factory catalog. Even our $$$ custom lines work from a factory-defined palette. If you need a hand-mixed stain, hand-painted detailing, or an on-site color match, a local custom cabinetmaker will serve you better — at roughly 2 to 3× the $$$ tier.
- You want bespoke, hand-built joinery. Bertch and UltraCraft go a long way. But a true custom cabinetmaker shop will exceed what any production line can do — at roughly 2 to 3× the $$$ tier.
- You are outside our 7-state service area. Install is offered through our showroom network in VA, MD, NC, TX, NJ, FL, and TN. Out-of-area orders would be cabinetry-only — missing the design and install value that makes the model work.
- Everyone else — and that's the vast majority of homeowners we meet — starts with a free design consultation.
